The same can be said for Step 4: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. Whether we come through the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon Family Groups chances are we bring a lifetime of stinking thinking with us. Frankly, it takes a while for the fog to begin to lift, so that we begin to see ourselves and the world around us more clearly. If we have sincerely completed the first three steps and have truly made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him, then it is time to put that principle into action. We must find the courage to take a fearless look at ourselves and become willing to clean up the garbage we find. In order to proceed, we must identify the problems and get a clear picture of how our behavior affected ourselves and others around us. That picture is not always in focus for newcomers early in recovery, but as we continue to hang around the rooms, listening and learning from others, and keeping an open mind, we find more layers of the onion being peeled away. No Graduating Services We are not perfect, and never will be in this life. That is the reason there are no graduation services held at 12-step meetings! But if we continue to participate, carrying the message to others, and listening to what they have to share, we can continue to grow and make spiritual progress. Thats why they say, Keep Coming Back! Tools to Help With Self Inventory There are tools available to help in the 4th step process. There is a 4th Step Guide available online for all 12-step members. The online 4th Step Guide includes an exhaustive set of directions explaining how the guide works and a reminder that an inventory is simply a list: Please keep in mind that the Fourth Step is not dealing with changing anything. An inventory doesnt change things, it simply lists things. Your inventory is only a story of your feelings and acts from the beginning until now. The online guide then provides questions and suggestions to help with an inventory from childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, with a final conclusion section for here and now. The online 4th Step Guide is of course just a suggested guide that is intended to be helpful to those doing an inventory. It is not intended to be shared with anyone, it is for your eyes only, according to the directions. But the greatest help available in doing Step 4 is available from a power greater than ourselves, as visitors to the bulletin board have demonstrated in their shares on this step, as our study of the 12 Traditions and 12 Steps continues: Step 4: Daily Inventory As many of you know from my sharing at the Thursday night 12 step meetings, it took me a long time to get to even work on the 12 steps. I was told by my Sponsor that all I had to do was work the first step to its fullest, keep attending meetings, do what I was told, and the rest will come in time. By doing this I was in some manner working on taking the 12 steps, and it was well over a year before I ever missed a meeting. There finally came a time when I realized that I better get going on the 12 steps, by me attending so many meetings I knew who I wanted to help me with the steps. This very good friend of mine chaired a lot of 12 step meetings, (classes) which I started to attend. I went along just fine until I came upon the 4th step and I hit a wall. I felt real bad about so many things that I had done in my life, that it seemed impossible to get all of this inventory down right. Finally, one day I was sharing this with my sponsor and he smiled and asked me where I was going. He told me to do the best that I can at this time and I will have plenty of time to do the rest. He told me not to be beating up on myself, (keep it simple) and this is just what I did. It made it a lot easier and through time I was able to see better of how to take my moral inventory. Once we take these steps it doesnt mean that we are done, nor does it mean that we have to always do the 12 steps in order. I have to take a moral inventory of myself everyday of my life. I have to look back and make sure that I like what Skip has done. Loveya,Skip Step 4: Being Honest Here I am still on step 4. Been here for weeks and weeks it will take to complete. The only thing I can say that has really helped was obtaining the questions to the step on the internet. There must be 100 questions there and I am still in the childhood part. It is a very hard thing for me to do but I must do this. Being in my 40s I asked the questions, why dear God? Why go back to the past, the painful past. The past is gone, today is here tomorrow is, my hope. I see now why I must do this and continue to do so. My mother was an alcoholic and died at 49, my brother was an alcoholic and died at 48. Forty-seven is coming for me and I am not going. Looking in the past has made me understand now more than ever why I did marry an alcoholic. This step is hard -- this step can be painful -- but I only ask that you do it. One hour a day is not that much time and write out the answers and be honest with yourself and remember God is with you if that pain goes right into your heart. And also remember we are all here for each other. SS Step 4: A Journey Step 4 started out for me as a very scary thing. Moral inventory? I struggled with questions of morality for most of my life. I came from a religious background that was strict, conservative, and self-righteous. And the self-appointed leader in the family was a woman disgruntled with men, so nothing I said or did, even at age 12, was even close to her moral boundaries. So when I was told that eventually I would take a searching and fearless moral inventory, I was quite reluctant. Now to get through Step 4. My sponsor had asked me to do several things as a precursor to Step 4. First, I had to list ten physical attributes about myself that I liked. Then I had to list ten personality traits about myself that I liked. Another list was at least ten people that loved me. I had to read these lists every morning and every night for two weeks. My sponsor continued: Take a sheet of legal paper. Draw a line down the center, and then put a mark in the middle of the line. This was my life line, the center was the middle of my life (at the time I was 32, hence the mark indicated age 16). He told me to start making marks on the line denoting major events in my life. Once I had done all this, I was ready for Step 4. My sponsor flipped me Hazelden guides, but I couldnt do it that way. Then I attended a meeting one Friday night, largely attended by people rumored to be the graduates of Chicago AA boot camp (the dreaded residences). A woman stormed in, angry at some event that had just occurred, and made her comment, which included this: If you are working the 4th step, the best way to do it is the way the Big Book explains it. Now why this stuck with me I dont know, but I decided to try it. And I found that yes indeed, this was the best way for me. So I embarked on my 4th step journey. I wrote and I wrote and I wrote. I made lots of progress, but one day I just couldnt write any more. I knew I wasnt finished, but for some reason I had reached a brick wall and couldnt go on. I talked about it in meetings. I talked to my sponsor, but he couldnt help me. Then a friend in the program invited me to an ACOA meeting. I went to that meeting, and after only 10 minutes the brick wall had fallen down. I resumed writing my 4th step and completed it in just another week. ACOA had opened my eyes about many things that I had suppressed. Olaudah Equiano Feb.02, 2001 Olaudah Equiano In 1745, Olaudah Equiano was born in a small village in Isseke,Nigeria. His father was one of the chiefs in the village. At age eleven Equiano and his sister were kidnapped by two men and a woman never to see his home or parents again. After being kidnapped he was hiked across part of Africa untill he arrived at the coast where he was loaded onto a slave ship. While crossing the Atlantic to Barbados onboard the slave ship he and his countrymen were subject to horrors you could hardly imagine. Equiano tells about the horrors and torture slaves face not only on the slave ship but also on plantations and many other aspects of a slave's life. Equiano experienced almost all parts of a slave's existence. He was a slave throughout Africa, England, and the New World. Equiano is bought and sold several times. Religion also played a huge role in Equiano's life and I think that it helped him get through some really hard times. He is bought by a British Naval officer and serves in the British Na vy during the Seven Years' War. He is then sold to Robert King where he begins trading goods between islands and eventually makes enough money to buy his freedom. Equiano tells of the joy he feels when he becomes a free man. The rest of his life is devoted to helping slaves and to the cause of abolishing slavery. In 1756 Olaudah Equino was kidnapped and taken to a slave ship which is when his nightmare and battle with slavery began. Equiano and his countrymen were chained together and treated extremely badly. I've never heard of animals being kept in a worse place than the slaves aboard the ship. Below decks on the ship is where the real horrors took place. There were hundreds of slaves packed into a very small place. There was no room for a person to turn over and barely enough room to sit up. There was no light below decks, just a suffocating darkness. With the many people in such a small place and the humidity, the temperature below decks was unbearable. There was no fresh air, nothing but the nasty stench of the latrines and peoples body odor.The air became unfit to breathe and almost suffocated them. There were children that would fall into the latrines and almost drowned. Many slaves would get sick and die in this terrible place and never make it to Barbados. Shrieks of women and the gr oans of the dying made the whole scene a nightmare. This caused some slaves to jump off the ship and drown themselves. The first time he was flogged was on the ship when he refused to eat. Two white men tied his feet. One white man held his hands while the other flogged or whipped him. Prisoners were severely cut and flogged for hours for trying to jump off the ship. He had never seen such savage brutal cruelty among people. When the ship reached Barbados the slaves were put into a pin like animals. At the sound of a drum, buyers rushed out to pick out the slaves they wanted to buy. Then no matter if they were friends, husbands, wives, brothers, or sisters they were separated and never to see each other again. Equiano was sold and worked on a plantation in Virginia County, weeding grass and moving stones. On this plantation he saw the black slave cook with some kind of iron muzzle that locked her mouth shut so she could hardly speak. I guess this contraption was put on her head so s he couldn't eat any of her master's food. Equiano served the British navy from 1958-1962 during the Seven Years War. In the hopes of being freed, Equiano gave all his wages and prize money to Micheal Pascal, but he was not freed, he was illegally sold to another man. In the article Acculturation and Alcohol Treatment in Ethnic Minority Populations: Assessment Issues and Implications, the authors research the impact of acculturation on the drinking behavior of minorities, specifically older Latino veterans versus older White veterans. In the article, acculturation is defined as â€Å" the exchange of cultural features from the continuous firsthand contact of one group to another. † The authors conducted a study that looked at the relationship between the level of acculturation and the level of alcohol use among older White and Latino male veterans. The subjects were 55yrs of age or older there were 18 White male veterans and 24 Latino male veterans. The authors hypothesized that the higher the levels of acculturation among Latino veterans would correlate to higher levels of drinking behavior. The hypothesis was backed up with the results; drinking behavior was correlated with acculturation levels. In Latino veterans higher past drinking behavior was associated with lower social affiliation with their own group. The concept of acculturation is something that is new to me. I can imagine though that it could have a profound impact on the lives of minority individuals. In reading the article, it was linked to higher levels of substance abuse in minorities as well as stress and psychological disorders; which in many minorities go undetected and/or untreated. This is a concept that I feel should be studied more. This article deals with older subjects, but I think the impact of acculturation needs to be studied in younger minorities, males and females. I hope to have the opportunity to look into the concept, theories, and potential impacts of acculturation more thoroughly as I continue my tenure here at USC. This article stresses, just as much of the material I have read in this class and my other classes, that as mental health workers and social workers we must mind our clients cultures and the impact of their culture on their behavior. With the idea of acculturation now added, as a social worker I need be mindful of the potential set backs minority clients may be experiencing by trying to fit in to the mainstream culture.

Death of a Salesman The American Dream Theme

Some may argue that the appeal of Arthur Millers play Death of a Salesman is the struggle each character encounters as they try to pursue and define their American Dream. The rags to riches idea—where hard work and persistence, coupled with high hopes and inner and outer struggles that often accompany it, should lead to success—seems timelessly relatable and represents one of the central themes of the story. Miller fabricated the character of a salesman without an identified product, and the audience connects with him that much more. Creating a worker broken by a vague, unfeeling industry stems from the playwright’s socialist leanings, and it has often been said that Death of a Salesman is a harsh criticism of the American Dream. However, according to Miller, the play is not necessarily a critique of the American Dream as our forefathers thought of it. Rather, what it condemns is the confusion that enters when people take the material success for the end-all-be-all and elevate it above spirituality, connection with nature, and, most importantly, relationships with others. Willy Loman’s American Dream To the protagonist of Death of a Salesman, the American Dream is the ability to become prosperous by mere charisma. Willy believes that charming personality, and not necessarily hard work and innovation, is the key to success. Time and again, he wants to make sure his boys are well-liked and popular. For example, when his son Biff confesses to making fun of his math teacher’s lisp, Willy is more concerned with how Biff’s classmates react than with the morality of Biffs action: BIFF: I Crossed my eyes and talked with a lithp.​​ WILLY [laughing]: You did? The kids like it? BIFF: They nearly died laughing! Of course, Willy’s version of the American Dream never pans out: Despite his son’s popularity in high school, Biff grows up to be a drifter and a ranch-hand.Willy’s own career falters as his sales ability flat-lines.When he tries to use â€Å"personality† to ask his boss for a raise, he gets fired instead. Willy is very much concerned with being somebody and paying off his mortgage, which in themselves arent necessarily bad goals. His tragic flaw is that he fails to recognize the love and devotion that surround him and elevates the goals prescribed by society above all else. Ben’s American Dream One person Willy really admires and wishes he was more like is his older brother Ben. In a way, Ben embodies the original American Dream—the ability to start with nothing and somehow make a fortune: BEN [giving great weight to each word, and with a certain vicious audacity]: William, when I walked into the jungle, I was seventeen. When I walked out I was twenty-one. And, by God, I was rich! Willy is envious of his brother’s success and machismo. But Willy’s wife Linda, one of the characters who can actually distinguish from true and superficial values, is frightened  and concerned when Ben stops by for a brief visit. To her, he represents wildness and danger. This is displayed when Ben horses around with his nephew Biff. Just as Biff starts to win their sparring match, Ben trips the boy and stands over him with the â€Å"point of his umbrella poised at Biff’s eye.† Ben’s character signifies that a few people can achieve the â€Å"rags to riches† version of the American Dream. Yet, Miller’s play also suggests that one must be ruthless (or at least a bit wild) in order to achieve it. Happys American Dream When it comes to Willys sons, they each appear to have inherited a different side of Willy. Happy, despite being a more static and one-sided character, is following in Willys footsteps of self-delusion and pretenses. He is a shallow character who is content with going from job to job, as long as he has some income and can devote himself to his female interests. Charleys and Bernards American Dream Willys neighbor Charley and his son Bernard stand in opposition to Lomans familys ideals. The protagonist frequently puts both of them down, promising his sons that they will do better in life than their neighbors because they look better and are more liked. Willy: That’s just what I mean, Bernard can get the best marks in school, y’understand, but when he gets out in the business world, y’understand, you are going to be five times ahead of him. That’s why I thank Almighty God you’re both built like Adonises. Because the man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you will never want. You take me, for instance. I never have to wait in line to see a buyer. Yet, it is Charley who has his own business and not Willy. And it is Bernards seriousness about school that ensured his future success, which is in stark contrast with the paths of the Loman brothers. Instead, Charley and Bernard are both honest, caring, and hard-working without the unnecessary bravado. They demonstrate that with the right attitude, the American Dream is indeed achievable. Biff’s American Dream Biff is one of the most complex characters in this play. Although he has felt confused and angry since discovering his father’s infidelity, Biff Loman does have the  potential to pursue the â€Å"right† dream—if only he could resolve his inner conflict. Biff is pulled by two different dreams. One is that of his father’s world of business, sales, and capitalism. Biff is captured by his love and admiration for his father and struggles to decide what is the right way to live. On the other hand, he also inherited his fathers sense of poetry and love for the natural life that Willy didnt allow to fully develop. And so Biff dreams of nature, the great outdoors, and working with his hands. Biff explains this tension to his brother when he talks about both the appeal and the angst of working on a ranch: BIFF: There’s nothing more inspiring or—beautiful than the sight of a mare and a new colt. And it’s cool there now, see? Texas is cool now, and it’s spring. And whenever spring comes to where I am, I suddenly get the feeling, my God, I’m not getting anywhere! What the hell am I doing, playing around with horses, twenty-eight dollars a week! I’m thirty-four years old. I oughta be makin’ my future. That’s when I come running home. By the end of the play, Biff realizes that his father had the â€Å"wrong† dream. He knows that Willy was great with his hands (he built their garage and put up a new ceiling), and Biff believes that Willy should have been a carpenter or should have lived in another, more rustic part of the country. But instead, Willy pursued an empty life. He sold nameless, unidentified products, and watched his American Dream fall apart. During the funeral of his father, Biff decides that he will not allow the same thing to happen to himself. Before beginning an assessment of Raskolnikovs psyche we must discuss Raskolnikovs background, he is an intellectual, a student, and we see obvious effects of an over used intellect throughout the novel. Although Raskolnikov is an intellectual at the beginning and throughout the novel, when we see a flashback to his childhood, we see a dramatic scene where Raskolnikov shows great compassion towards a horse. A conflict between intellect and compassion is a central point of the book. The conflict arises because intellect is not very good at being compassionate, and compassion is generally not logical. This is one of the imposing factors within the psyche of Raskolnikov. Although Raskolnikovs compassion can be classified neatly under superego, morality principal. Intellect does not fit directly into opposition with it under id. Intellect would best be classified under ego, reality principal. The main job being to find a balance between id and superego. A very good example of this mediat ion, is after Raskolnikov gives money to Sonia. This is an extreme extension of his superego, the ego lets it slide by. But after Raskolnikovs ego or intellect analyzes this action he realizes it has broken the balance too much and he regrets it. Almost the same thing happens when Raskolnikov kills the old woman. After the ego analyzes it, the ego disapproves, again a tipping of the scale. A contributing factor to Raskolnikovs chaotic psyche and major factor in the morose attitude of Raskolnikov is his desperate surroundings. We are greeted with dark, dirty, desolate, city where there is no hope anywhere. He is surrounded by drunkards and prostitutes, there are only a few people within the novel who have even an inkling of contentment. Living in this environment it is understandable how he could be so miserable. Getting back to criminality, we see that the criminal could most likely be said to be lacking superego, and be a person ruled by the id. But this is not really the case. Crime is a symbolic expression of tensions and conflicts in the psyche of the criminal (Introduction to Criminology, 2) There is nothing but a conflict, that for the most part has resulted in a stalemate. But every now and again, one part of the psyche takes power and this leads to Raskolnikovs erratic behavior. Raskolnikovs behavior is merely a result of conflict between two extremes, leading him to be so kind yet so cruel at times. One thing which has not been discussed is Raskolnikovs theory that the extraordinary person need not adhere to law. Without going into too much detail this could be said to be an attempt by Raskolnikov to rationalize the desires of his id with his intellect. Leading him to the strange conclusion that it is justified to kill someone if it is beneficial to certain people.In conclusion, Ras kolnikov is the product of a cruel and desperate society and tortured by a chaotic psyche, and eventually his erratic behavior leads him to his downfall. Cardinal Numbers Cardinal numbers one, two, three, or the numeric equivalents, and so on represent simple quantity (though, as shown in the previous paragraph, they can also be employed in a countdown or, in that case, a countup). The names of English numerals are all derived from Old English, as are the suffixes -teen, which derives from a form of ten and means â€Å"ten more than,† and -ty, which means â€Å"ten.† Hundred and thousand are also derived from old English, but million and other terms for orders of magnitude come from Latin by way of French. 2. Collective Numerals Collective numerals represent sets. There are various subcategories kinship terms such as twin and triplet, and musical terms like duo and trio – and, well, singletons, like that word, pair, dozen, and so on. Language origin varies among these assorted words. 3. Composite Numbers Composite numbers unary, binary, ternary, and so on represent composition (what something is composed of). Binary is the only one of these Latin-derived terms commonly used, though quaternary was applied to a geological age. 4. Distributive Numerals Distributive numerals represent alternating patterns. In some languages (like Latin, which has singuli and bini, for example, to mean â€Å"one by one† or â€Å"two by two† respectively), these numerals are represented by a single term, are usually described in English in phrases such as â€Å"each day,† â€Å"every other week,† and â€Å"every third month.† However, English also has one-word examples such as centennial and its multiplied variants, descended from Latin terms. 5. Multiplicative Numbers Multiplicative numbers once, twice, thrice represent repetition. The ancestors of these words are variations on the Old English words for one, two, and three. Among the categories listed in this post, the multiplicative group is the only one that does not represent any value higher than three. (The reason for this lack is unknown, though perhaps it’s because it’s rarely necessary to describe an attempt or action beyond several previous efforts.) 6. Ordinal Numbers Ordinal numbers first, second, third, and so on represent sequential order. Second is anomalous in that it alone comes from Latin rather than Old English; it supplanted the ambiguous English word other (still used in this sense in the phrase â€Å"every other†). There was never a twoth or a onth, for that matter; that latter vacancy was filled by a form of fore, while third and so on are derived from the cardinal numbers.) This is a good place to remind writers to deactivate the function on their computer that, by default, creates superscript ordinal indicators (miniature renditions of st, nd, rd, and th perched on the right shoulders of numerals). The perverse persistence of this Victorian affectation in state-of-the-art word-processing programs is a puzzler and an annoyance to editors, who have to convert such aberrant symbols into baseline indicators before production. 7. Partitive Numbers Partitive numbers half, thirds, fourths, and so on represent fractions. Half, which is from Old English, originally meant merely â€Å"part.† (Behalf, meaning â€Å"on the part of,† retains this imprecise meaning.) The others are just variations on Old English terms for the associated numbers. 8. Ranking Numerals Ranking numerals – primary, secondary, tertiary, and so on (this class shares quaternary and higher values with the composite-numbers category) represent degrees of importance or relevance. These terms are ultimately Latin in origin. 9. Reproductive Numbers Reproductive numbers single, double, triple, and so on, plus the generic multiple represent replication. Single and double are from Latin by way of French; the higher values are all directly from Latin. 10. Miscellaneous Terms Deuce, from the similarly pronounced precursor to French deux, is an old-fashioned synonym for two that persists in sports and gambling references. The mild oath â€Å"What the deuce,† a euphemism for â€Å"What the devil?† probably comes from association with deuce as a low score and therefore the outcome of bad luck. Trinity, from Latin through French, and triad, directly from Latin, both mean â€Å"a group or set of three.† Triplicate, meaning â€Å"threefold,† is from Latin; -fold is from the Old English cognate of -plus, which is where we got the element -ple and its extension -plicate. Treble is the French form of triple; both come from the Latin triplus.
